Challenging the Misuse of “Zionist”: A Call to Recognize Judaiophobia

The terms “Zionist” & "Zionism" are increasingly weaponized as a slur, stripped of their historical, political, and personal nuance and used as a vague accusation and lessering of Jews & Israelis. This trend distorts the meaning of Zionism and often serves as a proxy for deeper, unspoken judaiophobic sentiments. When “Zionist” is used to vilify individuals simply for their Jewish identity or connection to Israel, it ceases to be political critique and becomes coded bigotry. The term has been highjacked and we should aim to remove it from the discourse until its meaning is restored.

When we do hear it, we must not only recognize this misuse but also respond to it. When someone uses “Zionist” or “anti-Zionist” in a derogatory or accusatory way, call it what it is: judaiophobia. Clarify that they are expressing opposition to the existence of a Jewish state, and instead suggest that they should be Judaiophillic. This kind of language corrects the narrative and leads to positive dialogue.
